Mendom

According to Chinese Medicine theory, the kidney stores the innate essence and governs the reproductive function of the body. The kidney essence transforms into the kidney qi, which itself contains both the yin and yang qi for the kidney. As the body's reproductive function matures with age, the kidney essence is slowly released and transformed into the essence for reproduction via the restraining properties of kidney yin and the activating properties of kidney yang. When there is insufficient kidney yang, the yang lacks in activating power due to a relatively stronger restraining power by the yin. This results in impotency due to cold semen and infertility due to cold womb. When there is insufficient kidney yin, the yin lacks in restraining power due to a relatively stronger activating power by the yang. This results in seminal emission and other conditions caused by the kidney fire becoming relatively stronger. Deficiency in the kidney qi results in the impaired essence-storing function, therefore causing symptoms such as spermatorrhea, premature ejaculation and other pathogenic changes due to the loss of kidney essence. Studies have found the main kidney deficiency patterns in middle-aged and elderly persons with suboptimal health status are, in descending order: dual deficiency in kidney yin and yang (22.39%), kidney yin deficiency (15.42%), kidney yang deficiency (10.45%), insufficiency of kidney essence(9.45%), insecurity of kidney qi due to qi deficiency(7.46%). The characteristics of kidney yang deficiency include intolerance of cold, loose stools, frequent nocturnal enuresis, clear and profuse urination, etc. The characteristics of kidney yin deficiency Include tidal fever, flushed cheeks, vexing heat in the chest, palms and soles, constipation, night sweating, aching lumbus and weak legs, yellowish urine, etc. The characteristics of kidney essence insufficiency include premature greying of hair, hair loss and low sex drive.

The kidney essence and qi are responsible for the growth and development in the body, including the maturity of the reproductive function. In the different stages of life(toddler, adolescent, adulthood and elderly), the body's growth and development at each stage is determined by the strength of the kidney essence and qi.  The kidney qi follows a cycle: when it starts growing and reaches the maximum at adulthood, followed by the exhaustion of kidney until its depletion at old age. In the case when the kidney essence and qi are exhausted earlier than expected, early signs of ageing would appear, including premature greying of hair, ringing in

the ears, impaired hearing function, loose teeth and blurred vision. Kidney yang deficiency and kidney qi deficiency differs in degree, with kidney qi deficiency being less severe and kidney yang deficiency being more severe. This is because qi deficiency is the gradual process leading to yang deficiency, which is when qi deficiency is at its extreme. Qi deficiency is the display of functional deficiency, while yang deficiency is a combination of cold qi on top of functional deficiency. Kidney qi deficiency and kidney yang deficiency are mostly a result of ageing. When treated aggressively at an early stage, a delaying and restorative effect on kidney qi and yang can be observed.
